Son of gangster-turned-politician Pappu Kalani arrested by CID for allegedly threatening and assaulting an Ulhasnagar resident
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials yesterday arrested Omie Kalani, son of criminal-turned-politician Pappu Kalani in a case of alleged threat and assault on a person. Cops produced Omie, and his associates Manoj Lasi and Rahul Gurnani in Ulhasnagar court where they were then remanded in police custody till August 27. Incidentally, Lasi is the personal assistant of Pappu Kalani.

CID also informed Bombay High Court about the arrests. An Ulhasnagar resident Sunil Sukhramani alias Guddu (30), had filed a petition before the bench of justices VM Kanade and Pramod Kode. Two days back the HC had pulled up CID for not taking action against the accused, stating, “This is a most shocking state of affairs...ordinary citizens cannot survive in this state. It is not only the local police but the state CID which is acting in this manner.”

“Omie has surrendered before the court. All three accused have been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC and Arms Act,” said Bhojraj Jeswani, lawyer of Omie Kalani.
On November 13 last year, Omie along with his friends had allegedly attacked Guddu in the run-up to the Ulhasnagar civic elections. The victim says, Omie had threatened him with a revolver asking his aunt, Neetu Sukhramani, to withdraw from contesting the polls from Ward 35, as Omie’s mother was in the fray (‘NCP leader's son turns terminator’, Nov 13, 2011, MID DAY).
On July 22, 2012, Sukhramani was again brutally thrashed allegedly by Omie Kalani and his aides at Ulhasnagar. Central police has registered a fresh FIR in the matter (‘Pappu Kalani’s son lands BJP leader's kin in hospital, again’, July 24, MiD DAY).
Police claim Omie had been absconding after he was charged for attempt to murder, but he was frequently seen attending political ceremonies in the city (‘Cops can’t find criminal, we can’, May 21, MiD DAY).u00a0
