The government has proposed to hike the maximum rate of excise duty on ordinary, medium and premium brands to Rs.250, Rs.300 and Rs.500, respectively, per proof litre/based on alcohol content.
According to the bill, the reason for the proposed hike is to augment the state's revenues and hence the decision to enhance the maximum rate of excise duty leviable on 'Indian made foreign liquor'.
