The Uttar Pradesh police Monday questioned two relatives of ruling Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Shekhar Tiwari, who is accused of murdering a government engineer, about the crime.

K.K. Shukla and S.K. Shukla, who are brothers-in-law of the legislator, were picked up from their home at Rakesh Marg and taken to the Sihani Gate police stations for questioning in the case of the murder of public works department (PWD) engineer M.K. Gupta in Auraiya district of the state.

Gupta was allegedly beaten to death by the legislator and his accomplices for not meeting their demand to donate Rs.5 million to be gifted to state Chief Minister Mayawati on her birthday.

Ghaziabad police chief L. Ravi Kumar said the two were interrogated on information from the Auraiya police that the brothers of the legislator's wife were at Ghaziabad and could give some clues about the crime.

"So on Monday morning we interrogated them," he added.

However, K.K. Shukla told IANS they had no knowledge about the crime and only came to know about the incident through media reports. He also said they were not in touch with their sister, Sangeeta, married to Tiwari or the legislator himself.
