On Monday, civic body will impose 20 per cent cut on water supply to some areas in western and eastern suburbs; eastern suburb to face 100 per cent cut next day

Major water cuts next week

Parts of eastern and western suburbs will face 20 per cent water cut on Monday, while eastern suburbs will reel under 100 per cent water cut on Tuesday.

The hydraulic department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to complete fixing of a new capacitor bank at the Bhandup pumping station. As a result Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kurla, Mulund and Bhandup will receive no water at all.

As stated by the hydraulic department, as the work is being done on the main water line at Bhandup, these areas would be at the receiving end.

This announcement has come as a surprise for many residents because just before Diwali, BMC officials had announced a water cut and had assured that there would be no cuts during the Festival of Lights.

Hydraulic Engineer, R Bambale, said, “This is routine work. After completion of the work, the city would receive a good supply of water. Next time onwards, we will ensure that all work is carried out at night.”

In the first week of November, work of diversion of 1200-mm New Tansa Water Main at Eastern Express Highway, Suman Nagar, Kurla (East) in ‘L’ Ward had been executed. Because of this, Sion, Matunga and Dadar (E) areas were affected and did not receive water supply.Last month, residents of Bandra had witnessed water cuts twice and areas like Pali Hill, ONGC and areas near Lilavati Hospital had to make do with water tankers during the crisis.

Residents feel the corporation can carry out the work during the night, since usage is less, thereby affecting them to a lesser extent. “We will have to now fill water in advance, as the water cut would come into effect on Monday morning when everyone would be rushing to work. We would have to refrain from stepping out on Sunday, as if we don’t fill sufficient water we would be left with no potable water and will have to order packaged water,” said Bhandup resident Vidya P.

Bandra resident Karthik Nayak, said “Bandra has become a favourite spot for the BMC to implement water cuts. Every now and then there are water cuts and ordering water tankers is a regular habit. I hope this is the last water cut for this year.”u00a0
