His elder brother had been refusing to pay up for illegal power connection he had drawn from the victim's meter.

In an apparent case of squabbles with siblings over payment of electricity bills, a 30-year-old man hanged himself at his Nandini Layout home on Monday night. However, the in-laws of the deceased claim that his own family members did not want to give him any share in their ancestral property, which drove him to take the extreme step.

Despair: Fed up with the fights, Tangaraju and his wife Annapurna had
even met Commissioner Shankar Bidari.

The deceased, Tangaraju, was an auto rickshaw driver. "Tangaraju's father, Muniyappa, owns nine flats in Nandini Layout, and has given out five on rent, while the rest are occupied by Tangaraju and his brothers," said a police officer.

Tangaraju was the youngest in the family, and would usually foot the electricity bill. He had often requested his elder brother, Ramu, to contribute, but the latter would only quarrel with him, the police said.

"On the night of the incident, Tangaraju again had a fight with Ramu, who allegedly beat him up. Even his sister joined Ramu in chastising Tangaraju. Unable to take humiliation at his siblings' hand, a distraught Tangaraju went inside the house, and shut the door from inside," said the officer.

Annapurna, his wife, alleged that no one came to help despite her repeated pleas. Finally, she called her brothers who live in Srirampur. After they forcefully unlocked the door, they found Tangaraju hanging from the ceiling.

Annapurna alleged that besides this, the brothers fought bitterly over many issues. Earlier, they used to force her for dowry, and when Tangaraju stood in her support, the other brothers forced him out of the house.

Fed up by the fights, the couple had filed fives complaints at the Nandini Layout police station, and Annapurna had separately met Commissioner Shankar Bidari in this connection.

Tangaraju's father confirmed that the the quarrel was over electricity bill payment and said, "I never thought he would go hang himself over such a trivial matter." The police have arrested Ramu and are questioning
his family.
