Conference to take a fresh look at changing face of traditional shaadis

Around 500 men and women will gather at the Nivara, Navi Peth on Sunday, to discuss concepts other than traditional marriage Members of Women's Network, responsible for organising the seminar, believe that there are several options and one should not just restrict them to the traditional concept of marriage.

Pointing out to recent statistics, Mangala Samant, President, Women's Network, said, "The divorce rate among the upper middle class has shot up to 40 per cent. In the IT sector, it has already reached 46 per cent."

Theory of evolution
Samant has written a book on the history of marriage and sexual relationships in the past. The conference proposes to discuss the evolution of the marriage system in the past 5,000 years.

Dr Sunilkumar Lavate, an educationist and thinker, will also speak in the conference. Dr Geetali V R, Editor of women's magazine Miloon Sarya Jani and convener of the conference, said that the live-in relationships or homosexuality would be discussed in the conference.

According to Geetali, male domination is a prime concern. "It is sad that even though an employed wife works hard for her family, she still doesn't get her spouse's appreciation. Parenthood for a single woman is also an issue that will be discussed in the conference," she remarked.
