This Independence Day, a group of Mumbaikars will fight to conserve the Aarey Milk Colony. The NGO Watchdog Foundation, along with several volunteers, has decided to organise a flag march on August 15 to underscore the need to protect Aarey. The name of the march, Aarey Chhodo Andolan, has been fashioned on the famous Bharat Chhodo Andolan or the Quit India Movement.
In the last few months, several citizen groups have come forth to promote this cause. The activists have clearly stated that they are not against the Metro project or development, but biodiversity in the forest area should not be affected.
A car depot for the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro Line III is likely to be built on the Aarey premises.
According to sources, the upcoming I-Day march will start from Marol. "We appeal to NGOs and Mumbaikars to join our march and help us save Aarey. The march will begin at 10 am from Police Camp main entrance on Marol Maroshi road at Vijay Nagar and it will end near Picnic Spot," said Godfrey Pementa from Watchdog Foundation.
