Thousands of professors in Maharashtra will boycott work on Wednesday to protest several unresolved issues with the Central government. The professors, who hail from the Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratangiri and Sindhudurg regions of the state, are joining hands with All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (AIFUCTO), which had called for a mass one-day casual leave on October 5, globally observed as International Teacher's Day.
Since the Bombay University and College Teachers' Union (BUCTU) is affiliated to the AIFUCTO, it has decided to give its full support to the protest. "No lectures will be held on Wednesday," Dr Madhu Paranjape, general secretary of the BUCTU, confirmed. "There are so many issues, which have remained unresolved for so many years. There are promises and assurances after every protest. But, sadly the situation continues to remain the same. We have been organising protests so that the government understands the woes of teachers. We will continue to protest, until positive action is taken," she added.
The long list of impending demands by professors include filling up all vacant posts on permanent basis in colleges and universities, contractual teachers and teachers in self-financed colleges to be given the same pay as regular teachers in aided/government colleges, UGC pay scale for all categories of teachers, consulting teachers on decisions regarding education policies, among others.
"The government keeps talking about bringing global standards in higher education and making Indian universities on par with globally-renowned universities. How do they plan to do it without taking teachers into consideration?" questioned Paranjape.
