Chand said Bikramjit Singh told the police that he was in a love with a girl who works in his company at Gurgaon. Singh was earning Rs 7 lakh annually. His girlfriend duped him and got engaged to a junior whose salary had been hiked to Rs 15 lakh per annum by the company and was sent to the US. Bikramjit felt humiliated. He then decided to teach his girlfriend a lesson. He also hatched a conspiracy to kill her fiance.
Elaborate plan
Earlier this year, he came to know that the fiance was likely to return from the US in May. He identified a businessman residing in his locality as a soft target to extort money. "He only needed a weapon to kill his girlfriend's fiance. Bikramjit also needed a cellphone to make extortion calls. He then planned to kill a woman, Renu, a resident of Burari, whom he knew through common friend," said the DCP.
Police said that he had met Renu around three years ago. In April, Bikramjit called her up to execute his plan. "He was carrying a kitchen knife when he went to meet her. Since, he visited the lady after about two years he could not identify her residence and on the way asked people for directions. Hence, he decided to come back another day," said the senior police official.
Meanwhile, Bikramjit came to know that the fiance had not returned and would be back in India in September. He then again called Renu who gave him her address. Police said that on July 7 Bikramjit stabbed Renu to death at her residence. He then disappeared with her cellphone. The accused threw the knife in a drain near his house. A case of murder was lodged by the victim's sons at Burari Police Station.
"Bikramjit then started making extortion calls using the cellphone to extort Rs 15 lakh from the businessman, claiming to be an aide of an underworld Don," said the DCP. The victim businessman, after getting the first extortion call, approached the crime branch with his complaint. Immediately a case was lodged. Police asked the victim to strike a deal with the extortionist."The businessman negotiated the amount to Rs 7 lakh. Bikramjit called him near Gole Market area. A police team laid a trap and arrested him," said the police official.
