Italian Ballet, Indian sounds
Unusual as it may sound, it is exciting to see traditional Italian ballet married to the very soul of classical south Indian music on stage. Ipnos, the Italian ballet, has a perfume as a protagonist. It is based on the hypnotic powers of scents and colours.
The sense of smell is used to trace memories of situations and people, collected in a sequence of scenes. Ipnos in Greek mythology refers to the God of Sleep and Dreams who, with his unlimited powers, can transport people as well as other Gods to a dreamlike world. While in the Indian scripture, smell transports humans from one form to another in the mind.
The ballet will be a fusion of classic Western beats with archaic south Indian mridanga. This would be the first time a ballet would be combined with the Indian taals, mridanga and kanjira (the south Indian frame drum). The ballet artistes, the Italian composer and the south Indian musicians would be scattered across the stage, performing live.
Ricaardo Nova, the Italian composer, has been staying in Mysore since the 90s. This 45-year-old musician who learnt south Indian music from his Indian guru, MT Raja Kesari, would be coordinating sounds, silences, strokes, strings and Sufi voices with his counterparts from south India.u00a0
The event is part of a cultural exchange programme for 2011 celebrating 150 years of Unification of Italy. The ballet is prepared by Accademia Teatro alla Scala, a 200-year-old dance school in Italy with a group of 14 young artistes in their teens and early 20s.

Film: Edge of Darkness
The bullet that killed his daughter was meant for Boston cop Thomas Craven. That's what the police brass and Craven himself think, but that's not what the investigation finds. Clue after clue and witness after witness, the search leads Craven to a shadowy realm where money and political intrigue intersect.
If Craven wasn't a target before, he -- and anyone linked to his inquiry -- now is. Mel Gibson stars in his first screen lead in eight years, making Craven's grief palpable and his quest for payback stone-cold and relentless. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) directs from a screenplay co-written by The Departed's William Monahan. Gibson is back, taking us to the edge and into sinister darkness.
