In what could be termed as an exhibition of cheap politics during the General Body (GB) meeting as per the corporators from the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), corporators from the opposition party demanded adjournment of the meeting, saying that they wanted to express solidarity with the minor who was raped in the wee hours of Wednesday.
However, the request to end the meeting came after approval of 45 proposals, and just before the tabling of the NCP-backed biodiversity park project(BDP).u00a0
Turning down their demand to call off the meeting, Mayor Chanchala Kodre said, “If the elected members from the opposition parties really wanted to express solidarity, then they should have demanded the adjournment at start of the meeting. The GB meeting will only be adjourned after discussion on the BDP.”
Corporators of the opposition parties, mostly women, demanded that the GB proceeding be adjourned. They shouted slogans against the ruling NCP and tried to disrupt the meeting by snatching the microphone and papers from PMC officials sitting on the dais. They even pushed the municipal secretary who left the venue after handing over the reins of the proceeding to his deputy.
Tormentor nabbed
A day after a four-year-old girl was raped on Wednesday, officials of the Shivajinagar police station detained Ranjit Biswas (35), who hails from Kolkata, after the minor identified as her tormentor yesterday. “Biswas works as a cook. While checking his record, we discovered that in the past, he had tried to molest the girl’s sister too. He was in touch with the family and that’s how he succeeded in taking advantage of the situation,” Inspector Pandharinath Patil of the Shivajinagar police station said. u00a0
