The child is the daughter of an acquaintance of the accused.
In a complaint registered on November 15, John Cleetus, a businessman from Yashwanthpur, told the police he was at a dinner party with his wife and daughter on Thursday when the incident occurred.
Police sources said when John and wife Elizabeth went to take a look at the menu, Jain offered to hold the child till they came back.
When the couple returned to their seats after five minutes, they noticed the girl was crying and shivering uncontrollably.
The worried couple rushed the child to a nearby hospital with the help of hotel staff.
'She kept crying'
At the hospital, the duty doctor failed to diagnose anything, after which the couple went to the M S Ramaiah hospital.
There the child was examined by Dr Manjunath, who prescribed some general medicines. But the child would not stop crying and the couple went to the Baptist Hospital for a second opinion.
Even there, Dr Acchamma, who was on duty, could not reach a diagnosis, and the couple returned home, since the baby had stopped crying by then.
"The doctors initially thought it was an ear or stomach infection but failed to find anything of the sort," John said in the complaint.
Finally, on Sunday, as Elizabeth was changing the girl's diaper, she noticed a scratch on her hip and a scab on the inner lining of the diaper. Further examination revealed a bruise on the girl.
Thinking back to how Jain had insisted on taking the child and made it sit on his lap, John came to the conclusion that the child had been sexually assaulted.
After consulting a doctor, he approached the High Grounds police. He requested immediate action since Jain was scheduled to fly out on Tuesday.
"He is a paedophile and I want him to be punished before he leaves India," John told the police.
When contacted by MiD DAY, John refused to comment.
High Grounds police inspector Lokeshwara refused to reveal case details, terming it as a "sensitive issue that cannot be discussed."u00a0
The case comes close on the heels of the arrest by the Frazer town police of a 32-year-old civil contractor.
The contractor was charged with raping a one-and half-year-old boy, who was the son of his security guard.
