Delhi Chief Secretary issues directive to departments to update their websites regularly

At a time, when several departments like Traffic Police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi, who don't come directly under the Delhi government, are reaching out to general public through websites and social networking sites, various departments which come directly under Delhi government are not even updating their official websites regularly.

A report compiled by the Delhi government states that a number of departments including various hospitals, weights and measures department which is responsible for authentication of meters of auto-rickshaws and the information and public relations department which publicises the government policies are taking four or five months to update information on their websites.

Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta has taken a serious note of this reportu00a0 and has now asked every department of Delhi government to update Information Technology department twice a month about their activities which would be useful to other departments and public.

"The report dated December 20 talks about the status of updation. Some departments have not updated their portals since August/September 2010.

All heads are directed to take necessary steps to update their espective websites immediately and also put a system in place for daily updation.u00a0 Every department now will send website update verificationu00a0 to IT department on 1 and 15 of every month," said the chief secretary in a letter to hundred odd governments departments.

"The information uploaded or provided by each and every department is not only used by the government departments to prepare the related data, it is also beneficial for general public. We have a large population in Delhi who look for every possible solution on the internet," said a senior Delhi government official.

The official added that the digitisation of official data in Delhi had started years ago and a number of IT related projects were already underway.

"Now, some of them have gone slowu00a0 but we cannot afford that. What we had wanted to showcase to general public is not being achieved. Social networking sites came later. We had fare calculators and route map system on our websites long back. But suddenly, we were left out in this race of information technology," commented an official.
