Nobody came to our rescue, say survivors

The survivors of Wednesday train crash are thanking the local villagers more than their luck.

Extremely angry with the authorities many of those who reached Nizamuddin railway station at 2:00 pm complained about the alleged indifference of the authorities.

Mahesh Jain, who was traveling along with his wife and two children, said the victims were left on their own for nearly three hours. "There were no ambulance and no police," he said.

Many survivors reached Delhi by road and, therefore, the Mewar Express which carried passengers of Goa Express too was fairly empty. There was a huge rush of the relatives of the survivors on the platform when Mewar Express reached Nizamuddin.

"All that we could get were rumours. There was no immediate help as being claimed by the officials. For hours together, the passengers were on their own. There was total chaos," said Bhaskaran, who was traveling with a religious group.u00a0 Gita, who had injuries in head and arms, said it was only villagers who helped her. "Nobody came to our rescue except for the locals," she said. Gita, a teacher at a Delhi school, said the accident occurred at 4:50 am but official help arrived only around 6:00 am.

A help desk was set up at Nizamuddin station to provide medicines, food packets and water bottles. The railway authorities also provided them with free porters to carry their luggage.
