Bengaluru: Congress-Janata Dal (Secular)-controlled city civic body BBMP has become the latest civic body to ban sale of meat within its limits on the day of Ganesha Chaturthi on September 17.

The Joint Director (Animal Husbandry) has banned slaughtering of animals and sale of meat in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits on September 17, 2015 on account of Ganesha Chaturthi, BBMP said in a release today.

Asked about the ban, BBMP Commissioner G Kumar Naik said, "It is a routine thing practiced on account of festivities."

The decision by BBMP in Congress-ruled Karnataka comes amidst the raging row over meat ban in several BJP-ruled states, including neighbouring Maharashtra.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao distanced the government from the decision banning sale of meat. "BBMP has taken the decision, it is a routine thing. Government has not taken any such decision," he said.
