Offenders sporting fancy number plates nabbed; Rs 1.80 lakh collected in fines

If you thought 4141=Dada, 2151=Raj were cryptic messages, think again. These are fancy number plates sported by adventurous Punekars. And to decode them is quite easy. Dada and Raj are nicknames of political groups and politicians. But all this will have to come to an end.
The last five days have seen the traffic division book 1,404 offenders and collected close to Rs 1.80 lakh as fine, for sporting such fancy number plates.
The cases against fancy number plates have gone up since the traffic police have been given Blackberry phones to track offenders. Sixty Blackberry phones that are connected to the common server have been put in place with the Traffic Control room to give constant updates of traffic offenders.
According to the Traffic Police Department, sporting fancy number plates is an offence under Central Motor Vehicle Rule (51), and attracts a fine.
PI Vijay Palsule told MiD DAY, "Apart from being fined, traffic officers remove the faulty number plates and then the vehicle is subsequently taken to the nearest traffic division. The vehicle is handed over to the offender only after he/she produces valid number plates."
