US President hits spa at ITC Maurya before visiting Rajghat

Before giving an ego massage to India, confirming US support for New Delhi's bid to get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, President Barack Obama was rubbed on by Indian hospitality at the ITC Maurya hotel on Monday.

The 44th US President started his busiest day on his first India visit with a visit to the luxurious spa -- Kaya Kalp -- at the ITC Maurya before heading to the breakfast table.

Obama and US First Lady Michelle are staying at the ITC Maurya on Sardar Patel Marg. The President went to the spa Kaya Kalp -- a Sanskrit word meaning rejuvenation of mind, body and soul - on Monday morning before heading for his official engagement and had a "nice, enjoyable" workout.

After the workout at the spa, which offers western style therapies using luxurious products that are natural, Obama and Michelle headed to the table for a breakfast which included Indian and continental varities. "He had sandwiches and some bakery stuff," a hotel official said.

But the hotel is mum on the Obama platter. Obamas also received Vice-President Hamid Ansari, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition of Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj at the hotel. The Obamas were given a traditional "Brides of India" reception at the hotel when they reached there yesterday evening with two young girls attired in a Rajasthani lehenga and a Bengali saree welcoming them.

The US President and the First Lady were received at the hotel, located in a 5.5 acre plot on Sardar Patel Marg, by ITC Chairman YC Deveshwar.

All the 440 rooms, including the 29 uniquely-designed suites, of the hotel have been booked by the US authorities for Obama's delegation and US Secret Services have secured the facility for the stay of the President.

Obama is the third US President to stay in the ITC Maurya in the past 10 years. In 2000, the then US President Bill Clinton stayed at the hotel, while six years later, George W Bush also chose the same facility.

Obama visit fuels Metro rush

There were jams on the roads, some thoroughfares were blocked. This time it wasn't CWG, but Obama. Delhi Metro witnessed a huge rush Monday as the Capital's commuters avoided travelling by road, fearing traffic restrictions due to the US President's visit.
"As I entered New Delhi Railway Station, I encountered a massive crowd. A lot of people had gathered on the platforms and queues were broken," said Payal Sharma, a college student. Many office-goers were delayed because of the rush. "I was at Rajiv Chowk metro station, going to HUDA City Centre. The platform was so packed that it became tough to even stand on the escalators. Many people actually got delayed on their way to work, for which they had avoided the roads in the first place," said Shailesh Makhija, a software consultant.

'Jai Ho' Obama

When MiD DAY called up Hari Om Sharma, head, north region, Vishal Packers and Movers, he refused to talk about Akshay Sharma's car. "I am not going to give him the car. Do whatever you want."
