Delhi police have finally got some information on the notorious highway robber Lakha
Who is Lakha?
A robber who terrorises truck and bus drivers along the highways in and out of Delhi and has been eluding the Delhi police for the last five to six years.
But with the arrest of three highway robbers, who drugged a driver and fled with his truck laden with goods worth Rs 10 lakh in Tughlakabad , the Delhi Police's crime branch has finally gathered some information about the elusive robber.
The three robbers, identified as Ombir Singh (26), Vipin (29) and Devender Rai (27) were arrested on Thursday, near Paras cinema in Nehru Place when they were on their way for a robbery in a nearby area.
According to a police official, during the interrogations Ombir, the gang's kingpin confessed to his involvement in several cases of robberies. He told the cops that he has been active for the last five-six years with the help of Lakha.
A police official, requesting anonymity, said, "Out of the Rs 10 lakh looted from the trucker in Tughlakabad, the trio got Rs 40,000 each and Lakha took the rest."
According to police sources, Lakha who is in his 30's keeps changing his residence on regular basis as he is among the top wanted criminals by the Delhi Police.
Based on the information given by the trio during interrogation, the police raided a godown, allegedly owned by Lakha, and seized paint worth Rs 10 lakh.
"Ombir revealed that he sent some amount from the loot money to his family back in Aligarh. The three also hired call girls from Noida and spent rest of the money in boozing," the official said.
"Ombir also said that he wanted to return his home but he could not because the resident would not allow him to settle as he was involved in many cases of eve teasing in his home town," he added.
Ombir also told the police that Lakha is a Sikh.
The police said that they were trying to establish the trio's link to many cases of robberies in and around the city, including many cases which have gone unreported.u00a0
Presently, Ombir was residing in Dabri and used to spend lavishly on his girlfriend.
Great Road Robbery
1. In March 2008, Ombir and his gang had stolen a container loaded with 2,500 picture tubes of television worth Rs 25 lakh.u00a0
2. In February 2004, the gang had stolen a container containing steel coils worth Rs. 39 lakhs.u00a0
