The 10-day harvest festival marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. The most spectacular celebrations take place in Trivandrum, Thrissur, and Kottayam and festivities dancing, traditional feasts served on banana leaves and snake boat races.
Thiru Onam, the most important day in the Onam calendar, was celebrated with innumerable households cooking a 26-dish vegetarian feast called 'sadya'.
