While the civic body is still making plans on providing protein-rich breakfast for resident doctors in Nair and KEM Hospitals, yet another resident doctor was diagnosed with the dreaded disease on Monday.

One more resident doctor in Mumbai tests positive for TB

A 27-year-old doctor from the psychiatry department of the civic-run Nair Hospital tested positive for Tuberculosis (TB) on Monday.

This came after two nurses from the hospital had tested positive for the air-borne disease two months ago.

A doctor from the hospital, on condition of anonymity,u00a0said, "The doctor had symptoms similar to TB after which his sputum samples were sent for testing and the results unfortunately was positive. He is currently undergoing treatment in the same hospital."

In 2013 itself, two more resident doctors from the Mumbai Central hospital have contracted TB apart from the nursing students. The incident where medical staff were contracting this disease came to light after MiD DAY reported how 15 doctors from civic-run Sion hospital had contracted TB among whom at least 7 had multi-drug resistant TB.

When 23-year-old Samidha Khandare succumbed to MDR TB this year in June, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) had demanded better living conditions in hostels.

"There is an acute space crunch in the hostels due to which there is over crowding with five to six doctors living in a small room. Due to this and poor ventilation coupled with long working hours makes us even more vulnerable to the disease as we treat TB patients on a daily basis," added the doctor.

Two doctors from Parel's KEM Hospital had also contracted TB this year. While Sion Hospital has been providing protein-rich breakfast to the residents since August, it is yet to be started in the other two medical colleges.
