The JD(S) can breathe easy as Operation Lotus appears to be on hold as per warnings in the form of advisory issued to the BJP government by the Central Government.

The advisory has prevented Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa from any misadventure. This has brought some respite to JD(S) chief Deve Gowda

The advisory has prevented Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa from any misadventure, as the UPA government has reportedly issued it as a preamble to invoke Article 356 to dismiss the government if need arises. Also, horse-trading of MLAs is among the prominently mentioned issues in the advisory.

With the Yeddyurappa government becoming safe soon after 11 rebel legislators returned to his fold, following the SC verdict of quashing the disqualification the rebel legislators, the CM had threatened to poach more MLAs from the JD(S) in a bid to smash it.

While the JD(S) leaders plotted to displace the government by joining hands with the Congress in the centre, a vengeful Yeddyurappa had pledged to finish the party.

"We don't want to take any risk at this point of time. Moreover, there is no need of Operation Lotus, as we have enough numbers in the assembly. The CM has said we should not indulge in such activities for now," said a BJP minister.

Still on guard
But this has not given the JD(S) any respite as the party leaders are still jittery over the issue.
"We can never trust these parties. Both Congress and BJP are the national parties wanting to finish regional parties. We better be on our guard," said H D Kumaraswamy, state president of the JD(S).

While a lull is prevailing after Central Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) rejected the Governor's recommendation to dislodge the BJP government in the state, the advisory has given a new twist to the tale.

Even as the BJP is preparing a defense strategy, the Congress is ready to nail the government on the floor of the house, when the assembly is called on June 2, while moving the SC with a plea for a Clarificatory Order on its judgment.

Working on ouster
"We are considering appealing to the SC for Clarifactory Order, as we think the BJP government has lost validity in the wake of the judgment. It is a landmark judgment passing strictures on the speaker and making observations on illegal sustenance of the government.

Once we are clearer about this, we can press for the ouster of the government," said B L Shankar, vice-president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Responding to this S Suresh Kumar, Law Minister, said there was no case for the Congress to question the validity of the government.

"They have already received a slap on the face as their own government in the centre made it clear that their move to dislodge an elected government was illegal."

He said the advisory was inconsequential as it was not issued under article 355 as it had been projected.

No confidence
Meanwhile, the Congress is preparing to corner the government in the house by moving adjournment motion to discuss the speaker K G Bopiah's position in the wake of the SC passing stricture against him for illegally disqualifying the rebel MLAs.

"We are even considering moving a no confidence motion against the speaker," said Siddaramiah, leader of the opposition in the assembly.
