Orphanage head worked in nexus with docs to give unwed women's babies for adoption, find police

Au00a0nexus has come to light between Mathew Yanmal, the director of Gurukul Godavari Balak Ashram who was arrested in a 'baby for money' adoption case filed a few days ago, and some city-based doctors to facilitate the delivery of pregnant unwed women whose children were then given for illegal adoption by faking documents.

Magisterial custody
The Yerawada police produced the arrested Dr Nandakumar Nalawade, Dr Sanjeevkumar Bhate and Rajan Durgappa Kusalkar in court yesterday as their police custody had ended. The three were sent to magisterial custody.

It was reported yesterday that there had been a police inquiry against Yanmal three years ago over handing over a baby girl to a woman.

Now, investigations reveal that Dr Bhate and Yanmal would direct unwed pregnant girls to Dr Nalawade's clinic for delivery and the newborn were sent for illegal adoption by submitting fake documents to the Child Welfare Committee.

Rajan Kusalkar, an employee of the adoption centre, was part of the nexus and would help the two prepare fake certificates.

Doc kept no records
Investigations further revealed that Yanmal had asked six such women to stay at Oam Vishwadarshan Seva Sanstha run by Dr Bhate. The women later delivered at Dr Nalawade's maternity home in Manjari near Hadapsar.
The police said that Dr Nalawade did not maintain records of these delivery cases.
