Deve Gowda and his son H D Kumarswamy reportedly argued bitterly over who the party's candidates for the forthcoming Legislative Council poll would be

The approaching Legislative Council poll triggered a bickering between JD (S) boss Deve Gowda and his MP son Kumarswamy.

Fortunately for the party, it ended in an equitable truce.

The upper house goes for polls to elect candidates on seven vacant positions on June 10. JD (S) appears to have strong chances of winning two seats with Congress support.

The differences led to bitter argument between the two, on Sunday, a day before the last day for filing nominations. The party could only finalise candidates only Monday afternoon.

Suryanarayana Reddy and M Srinivas were chosen as JD (S) candidates after father and son arrived at a truce.

Suryanarayana Reddy, a former JD (S) MLA from Bellary, has interests in mining. Yatnal is a former MP representing Bagalkot, who defected from the BJP to JD (S) recently.

Kumarswamy's rationale was that Suryanarayana Reddy would help the party counter the powerful Reddy brothers of BJP in Bellary.

Yatnal, on the other hand, would prove useful in countering Chief Minister Yeddyurappa. Yatnal as well as Yeddyurappa are Lingayats. The two had fought bitterly before Yatnal defected to the JD (S).

"Difference of opinion is the hallmark of a democracy. If there were differences in the party over selection of candidates, it only goes to show that our party is democratic.

Our party is all set to win the next Assembly polls. Other issues are secondary," said Milind Dhramasena, general secretary, JD (S).

Reacting to the development, Kumarswamy said, "These are all minor issues. All I can say is that I don't make mountains out of molehills."
