Around 10 activists of animals right group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animalsu00a0 (PeTA) yesterday gatecrashed the premises run by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), an NGO working for animal welfare, and rescued 11 dogs, who were allegedly sick and woefully underfed.
Anuradha Sawhney, chief functionary of PeTA India, who led the activists,u00a0 told MiD DAY, "PeTA member Jayasimha NG had on Monday inspected the SPCA centre and discovered that the complaints about the dogs dying of malnutrition and disease were true. We sent a report on the conditions to the Animal Welfare Board of India, who authorised us to shift the sick animals for treatment."u00a0u00a0u00a0
The 1.5-acre SPCA centre has dilapidated buildings and enclosures for animal birth control and the dogs. The Pune SPCA's main source of funds are its 60 members who donate Rs 1,000 per head per annum, and an interest-free loan of around Rs 2 lakh from Jeev Jaya Mahamandal, an organisation that funds animal shelters.
Lt Col Boman Amaria of the SPCA said, "How do you expect us to maintain the premises and the dogs or even pay the doctors with the nominal amount we manage to get? Even the PMC is supposed to pay us Rs 470 per dog, but they are not sending any dogs to us."
Narendra Thakur, in charge of animal birth control at PMC, denied they had nothing to do with the SPCA. "They are an NGO. We are working with the Blue Cross Society of India, another NGO, as per the guidelines of the government on a one-day sterilisation programme. We sterlise the dogs and set them free in the area from which they were taken."
