MMRDA eyeing option to curb noise pollution at residential areas along 11.07-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor

Plans for noise barriers on stretches of VAG Metro route

Residents of areas along the alignment of the Metro and Monorail can expect not to face further noise pollution when services start, as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to erect noise barriers where required on these routes.

The 11.07-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) Metro Rail corridor passes through highly populated areas and residents are already being subjected
to a certain amount of noise pollution because of heavy traffic and chaos caused by the ongoing work.

MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar said, “It will be too early for us to comment on the same, as it is at the initial stage. But yes, we will install noise barriers wherever necessary.”

Four Bungalows resident Paresh Ingale said, “My building is just a few metres from the Metro station and the car depot. I personally feel that noise barriers should be installed before the line becomes operational. There is already major noise pollution in our area and with schools and dispensaries along the corridor, barriers should be a priority.”

The MMRDA also plans to install noise barriers along the Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur Monorail route, as KEM, Wadia and TATA hospitals are in the areas.

The idea to install noise barriers come to the fore, after a similar project completed recently by the authority on a stretch along the Bandra-Kurla Complex, was successful.u00a0
