A report by the Regional Passport Office reveals that 47,938 passport application are pending, leading to further pileup. Out of these, 50 per cent are from Bangalore due to pending police clearance.
The jurisdictional police is required to verify applicant's documents within 21 days and send the report, following which passports will be issued.

"We have limited manpower, but we still manage to pull it off. We are waiting for the police clearances for nearly 25,587 applications in the city. If that is done on timely basis, we can print all remaining passports and dispatch them to applicants in a short span of time," said Dr K J Srinivas, Officer, Bangalore Regional Passport Office.

Working Sundays
City police chief Jyoti Prakash Mirji reacted to this and pitched in an idea to clear backlog. "We anyway work on Sundays and now we will work from 10 am to 1 pm especially to clear pending applications," he suggested.

Pilot Project
The Ministry of external Affairs in Delhi had given the contract to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for front office work, and Bangalore setup was the 'chosen one'. The project has been fruitful since its inception a year ago and the process has helped in clearing backlogs. Currently, these centres give appointments to 3215 members each day. In addition, regional passport centers will now come up in Tamil Nadu on a tie-up with TCS.
