N Dayanand (29), one of the youngest councillors in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and first deputy mayor in the BJP ruled council, managed to have the mayoral elections postponed for a week, so that his wedding invitation does not read 'former deputy mayor' at the end of this month.

Dayanand is getting married on April 27, while his term as deputy mayor ends on April 23, and he decided that it would be better if he entered married life as deputy mayor. He informally requested Mayor S K Nataraj to have the elections postponed till after his wedding. The mayor forwarded the request to BBMP Commissioner H Siddiah and the authorities obliged to move the elections to April 30

Dayanand and his bride-to-be Keerthi and her family were elated at this outcome.

Everyone's wish
"It was not only our wish that Dayanand be married while still the deputy mayor, but the wish of all the councillors' as well. That wish is fulfilled and we are happy," said G M Praveen, Dayanand's cousin, who is over viewing the marriage arrangements.

The marriage will take place at Jasma Mandir in Austin Town and Praveen did not forget to extend the cordial invitation to the wedding to this reporter.

Dayanand, a first time councilor, who represents Bennigana Halli ward in the BBMP council, took charge as deputy mayor along with S K Nataraj, who was elected asu00a0 mayor, on April 23 last year. Both tenures are for one year and the BBMP proposed to have a new mayor and deputy mayor elected before April 23 this year.

The council sits once a month and the meeting is usually held at the end of each month.

'It is allowed'
"As per the convention, the new mayor should chair this month's council meeting. The elections are being held on April 30, following which the council meeting will be held. This move is allowed under the act," informed Siddiah.

While the mayoral polls have kicked up hectic political activities in the ruling BJP, many aspirants are in the race. As per the roster, the mayor post is reserved for woman from scheduled caste and the deputy mayor post is for backward class (category A).

All in the running
While Sharadamma, representing Shetty Halli ward, is the front-runner for the mayor post, M Roopa Ramesh from Bileka Halli, G B Huvaneswari from Sarwajna Nagar and Savitha Ramesh from Hoysala Nagar are strong contenders.

B Somashekar (Shakabai Nagar), is seen to be a close associate of state BJP president K S Eswarappa and fellow Kuruba, and is tipped to be the deputy mayor. However, Padmaraj (Basaveswara Nagar), M Revanna (Ramamurthy Nagar) and D Venkatesha Murthy (Kattariguppe) are also in the race.

"We have not decided on the candidates yet," said B N Vijayakumar, MLA from Jayanagar and former president of Bangalore City unit of the BJP. He added, "We have called a meeting on April 25 to decide who should enter the fray. Candidates for mayor and deputy mayor will be selected on merit basis in accordance with the roster."
