Poor lighting claims three young lives

Three youngsters on the way to Coffee Day on Mysore Road died when their car fell off the bridge yesterday morning.

The hump on the beginning of the bridge is blamed for the accident, but traffic experts blame the lighting and driver's speed and not the hump.

Pradeep, a techie and bank employees Chetan, Dhruv and Vivek were going to the cafe at around 2 am on Monday. Construction of a bridge is near Kengal Anjaneya temple on Mysore Road.

The road has been made a two way temporarily and a hump put at the beginning of the bridge for the time being.

The Ford Fiesta with the four friends sped over the hump and lost control and fell below the bridge. Pradeep (28), Chetan (30) and Dhruv (28) died and Vivek is in a critical condition.

If the hump was not right at the beginning of the bridge the accident might not have taken place.

Traffic experts however stand by the hump and say that the lack of lighting and over speeding might have been the reason.

Too many humps

"Humps should not be there at the beginning of a bridge. In this particular case it was a temporary hump put only since the portion of the bridge which was one way earlier was made two way because of construction," said M N Srihari, ABIDE traffic expert.

He however agrees that if there was proper lighting in the area, the accident could have been avoided. "At night humps cannot be seen. If there were proper street lights it would have been helpful. The car might have been over speeding. I do not know if the driver was intoxicated," he said.
