Power supply to be augmented in state

Those who are worried about power cuts this summer can relax as the state's supply position will be augmented by 230 MW from the Varahi Hydroelectric Power Plant by the end of February to meet the peak-hour load.

"To meet the peak hour shortage, additional power will be supplied only in the morning and evening," said K Jairaj, principal secretary, Department of Energy.

He added that the state is currently receiving 350 MW from the Bellary Power Plant. But soon the plant will supply 500 MW to the state. The state is facing a power shortage of 30 per cent, due to increasing demand for power during peak hours.u00a0

The state also lacks new high-power generating projects. "No new projects have come up since 2000. Every year the power demand is increasing by 1000-1200 MW and we have only small generating units that can supply 400 to 450 MW," added Jairaj.
