According to Roy, it all began with the staff of his company, Vertigo Expedition, receiving an email from a person claiming to be the MD of a leading IT company.

The sender asked them to send the e-mail addresses of Vertigo's clients to his official email address as well as his personal email address.

Anticipating business propositions, the staff did as requested. While the mails to the official address bounced, the mails to the personal address went through.

Soon, Vertigo's clients started receiving obscene mails defaming the company.

"He used to download pornographic material from websites and send it to my clients stating that they are porn clippings of my wife and mother," Roy told the police. Roy also got a couple of abusive mails.

The Ashok Nagar police, who are investigating the case, said it could be the handiwork of either business rivals or frustrated former employees.

Sub-Inspector Vijay Hadagali said they were close to cracking this case.

When contacted, Sunil Roy told MID-DAY he had withdrawn the case.

But the police said he was lying and the investigation was in progress.
