Made by master chef Ram Kumar, a professional cook who teaches at the school, and his pupils, the chocolate gateau was decorated with cream, cherries and had the number 65 emblazoned on top. One of the trainee bakers said they used five eggs in the mix for the treat. A birthday card signed by many of the children from the Katha Community School was also presented to Prince Charles, who toured the school with the Duchess of Cornwall.

When the royal couple first arrived in the south Delhi slum called Govindpuri, residents lined the road outside the school to welcome them. The royal couple then visited one of the world’s largest temples, Akshardham, opened in 2005. As they arrived they were given garlands of fragrant frangipani, while Charles was anointed with a red dot on his forehead and given a friendship bracelet. After the Delhi leg of their tour, Prince Charles and Camilla flew out to Mumbai where they will attend a lavish dinner thrown by Mukesh Ambani.
