Four arrested for trying to blackmail south Delhi family on fake charges of rape; maid in the net too

In another horror story involving domestic help placement agencies, four persons, including two women, were arrested by the police for blackmailing a resident of Malviya Nagar on alleged fake charges of raping the maid of the house.

On Wednesday evening, Sood and his family filed a case of extortion at the Malviya Nagar police station. Two hours later the owner of the placement agency along with the maid visited the police station and filed a case of rape against Sood and his family.

According to the police, during investigations it was found that the placement agency's owner identified as one Mamuni had struck a deal with Sood that if he paid Rs 5 lakh to them then they would withdraw the case.

"The placement agency was running a racket. They also had a lawyer by the name of Hemant Kumar, who promised them that they would settle the case and make it authentic by taking the statement of the maid on a stamp paper. The family told us the placement agency had struck a deal with them to settle the false case if they submitted the amount at the agency office," said a police source.

Following investigations, the police laid a trap and arrested Hemant Kumar along with Mamuni, the maid and her aunt red-handed while accepting the money. "We have arrested the four of them and charged them for extortion and trying to implicate the family in a false case. The placement agency was running this racket for quite some time. The lawyer is a professional in one of the city courts, we are still investigating if he is really practicing in the city courts or not," said a senior police official.

Police sources also said the family had revealed to the cops that the maid had been caught stealing items from the house around 15 days ago but they had forgiven her and had asked her not to do it again.

Girls duped into working as maids without adequate pay were reportedly rescued in the last two years by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan. The Delhi Commission for Women has also been trying to implement stricter norms.

Maid for trouble

In August, the Delhi Police arrested a gang of four for allegedly duping more than 100 customers. The gang was running a placement agency which provided maids to people for anything between Rs 8000 and 16,000.

These maids used to disappear with cash and other valuables at the very first opportunity.
