It's a dilemma every metro dweller faces. We dig street food, the chatpata variety that cynics think tastes good because it has a dose of the vendor's sweat in it. Hygiene issues take us to clinical restaurants that serve the same fare, but it's nowhere close to the real thing. Kanaiya Corner, Dombivli's brand new chaat eatery, offers a middle ground: Roadside fare at rasta prices, in hygienic environs.
What's to eat? They serve a host of chaats, Vada Pav, Jalebi Fafda, sweets, Dhoklas, Chivdas, Farsan and cakes.
Ambience: The large, bright yellow signboard helps locate the eatery from a distance. The chaat and vada sections are located on either side, while the main counter dishes out coupons, sweets and farsan. If you are famished, there is toe room to grab a bite. Else, you can carry a takeaway.
We liked: The chaats use roasted farsan and have generous sprinkling of beetroot and coriander. The Sev Puri (Rs 10) and Dahi Puri (Rs 10) were yummy with just the right balance of sweet and spicy. The Jalebi Fafda (Rs 10), a salty-sweet concoction Gujaratis love, is a mix of farsan or savoury and Jalebi. We've tasted better Vada Pav (Rs 5). You might want to go for theu00a0 Sabudana Vada (Rs 10), instead.
Service: Despite the fact that a whole hoard of customers stood in queue, the time taken to bag a coupon and finally being served took a little over five minutes. We bugged them for extra chutney, several times over and they were still polite.u00a0
