Bagwe has new idea to preventu00a0 suspects' escape

Revolving doors at the entrance to lock-ups in police stations is the latest brainwave Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe has had to prevent arrested suspects from escaping.

Surprise visit
Bagwe paid a surprise visit to the Bund Garden police station last afternoon, two days after a history-sheeter, Papul (22) alias Chor Raja, arrested by the Crime Branch along with six accomplices for dacoity and assembling with intent to commit dacoity, escaped from the lock-up.

Bagwe questioned Raja's accomplices after inspecting the lock-up.

"The toilet block is close to the entrance of the lock-up. I have asked the officers to install a revolving door at the entrance," said Bagwe. "It will be an obstruction for the person leaving the lock-up."

Bagwe said he was also going to conduct a review of other lock-ups in the city and direct the police to make necessary changes to improve security.

Three police constables, S N Sawant, Prasad Kalange and B N Narle, who were on duty on Saturday when Papul made good his escape around 8.30 am, were suspended for negligence.
