The police have collected a fine of Rs 75.8 lakh in just a week's time for various traffic violations between December 20 and 26, 2009.

The statistics reveal that the police have booked 10,885 cases for riding two wheelers without helmet out of the total 53,685 traffic violations.

Traffic Expert Prof M N Sreehari said, "In 2008 the city police had collected around 35 crore as fine.u00a0 This is just a tip of the iceberg as 95 per cent of the violations go unnoticed. If the city traffic police is able to fine each-and-every traffic violator then the fine amount will be whooping."

"Every year they have to collect more than the previous year's figure. As this was the year end, they must have taken up the drive to meet the target," says Sreehari.

The cops also found that a majority of the auto rickshaws in the city run without the Auto Driving License Display System, which was made compulsory in 2006. They booked 4,707 cases of auto rickshaw display card violation.

Apart from these, the traffic violations that crossed the 1,000 mark were for over-speeding (1,788) and signal-jumping (1,181) cases.

Also, 814 cases were booked for using dazzling headlamps, 754 rash driving, 65 drunk and drive, 428 driving without license and 33,065 petty cases were also booked between December 20 and 26.
