Sion Hospital opens state-of-the-art centres for kids with HIV and Thalassamia

The Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (LTMGH) in Sion, inaugurated a centre of excellence for HIV care, along with a Thalassemia day care center and pediatric neurodevelopmental clinic on Thursday

The hospital has also introduced a first-of-its-kind telemedicine facility for children who suffer from HIV. Children under treatment will also have access to television and play area at the hospital’s Thalassemia day care.


Mayor Sunil Prabhu, Dean Dr. Avinash Supe and other eminent doctors were present for the inauguration of all three departments today.


Sion hospital has 288 children registered with Thalassemia Center, who regularly undergo blood transfusion. There are 2180 children registered with HIV department, who come in every month for antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 3000 children are screened every year in neurodevelopmental clinic for Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia.


Dr. Avinash Supe, Dean of Sion hospital, said, "Our center for kids for Thalassemia, HIV center and Learning disability center was always there. We have renovated the place in such a way that the children can play and enjoy while taking a treatment and also more number of children can get access to all these three centers of our Pediatric department."

Dr. Mamta Manglani, Head of Department, Pediatrics Sion, said, "We have upgraded our pediatrics department. It is the first time that the hospital has started play area for the kids suffering from Thalassemia, HIV and neurodevelopmental clinic. The area has been renovated in such a way that more number of kids can get access to the facility being provided by the LTMG hospital. The telemedicine is the first time ever LTMG that is any government hospital is starting for the children in the country. Till now the children with learning disability were coming for the remedial therapy and now the neurodevelopmental clinic will also help the children suffering from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism to get treatment. We have brought the modernization testing pattern happening in abroad that will help us to diagnose the LD, ADHD and Autism kids. We will give them remediation and put them in right schools."

Mayor Sunil Prabhu, said, "It is very prestigious thing to know that the LTMG have upgraded their pediatrics center not only for the HIV affected kids but also for the Thalassemia and neurodevelopmental disorders. I will make sure that more funds are allocated by the BMC rather then waiting for the private donors."
