As per the recent survey, about 35 per cent of the city population lives in slums and therefore, the PMC has declared to develop these pockets and make Pune a slum free city by the next five years. Aiding in this would be the city's first slum atlas created by Maharashtra Social Housing and Action League (MASHAL). The atlas will help the PMC and builders to make development plans accordingly and also make informed decisions.

Sharad Mahajan, Executive Director, MASHAL, said, "We have been conducting in-depth survey of each slum in the city for the last three years and have now come up with a detailed report for the PMC. The atlas could act as an official reference for the PMC, city builders, NGOs and social scientists. It will soon be officially released by the state chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad."

The slum maps were made with the help of satellite images, Geographical Information System (GIS) and lane table survey, with a cost of Rs 10 lakh. Mahajan said, "The slum maps are superimposed on the development plan of the city to get clear idea about its exact locations. Some are located on hill-tops, green belt, reserved areas, and also on government lands."u00a0

According to Sanjay Kolte, Additional Chief Executive Officer, Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the data in the slum maps can be helpful in implementing the various 125 proposed schemes under the Rajiv Awas Yojana launched by central government to provide homes for the poor families.

Amol Biradar, Real Estate Agent, said, "With the aid of this atlas, we can now get clear pictures of the city's slums in one glance. But the builder lobby may get more financial benefits than the actual residents." Satish Magar, Builder and CREDAI President, Pune Chapter, said that the slum map could be more useful for the PMC and government and a time bound SRA can be enforced with the private initiative including the local builders.
