After navigating through Powai's labyrinth of Blytonesque streets and avenues named Kensington, Oxford and

High Street, we reached Powai's new restaurant Sesame, all geared up for an Oriental lunch. And although the staff patiently gave us directions to the eatery, they forgot to mention one small detail that we found out after we got there. Sesame is open to its patrons only after 7 pm.u00a0

Food: Sesame is meticulously Orient, both in its interiors and the presentation of its food.

The meat and ingredients are flown in from the Orient almost every day and displayed at the Sushi counter, just in case you are curious about its authenticity. As you sip your Jasmine tea, the chef explains how he is preparing your meal.

We began with Sashimi fresh pink salmon from the Sushi Bar menu. Priced at Rs 425, the salmon was tender, but we wished the Wasabi had a stronger flavour. The appetisers came next Pak Choi (juicy spring onions marinated in a delicious black fungus sauce) was priced at Rs 250. The Oriental Shitake Mushrooms with Water Chestnuts at Rs 299 were too oily, which took away from the fresh juicy flavour of the chestnuts. We were served a very generous portion of the appetisers, and although almost full, we decided to order Teppanyaki with Miso soup for Rs 375.

Watching chef Sunny Singh preparing the Teppanyaki was the highlight of our meal. The beef was cooked in its own sauces, mixed with vegetables and sprinkled with oyster sauce a heady combination. Our dinner ended with the Mango and Candid Chili Parfait with Crispy Wanton (Rs 190). The combination of cold creamy mango and a hint of chili had a surprisingly piquant flavour. The little wanton, filled with spiced mixed fruit, only added to the unusual taste.

Sesame is an addition to the list of stop-overs for those who take their Sushi seriously. If you like to play it safe, the chicken, beef and vegetarian variations are a great excuse to try the place out as well. It's also easy on the pocket and generous with its servings.
