United Nations: To achieve the universal goal of "zero tolerance for terrorism," India has called for strengthening the legal systems of nations in order to effectively prosecute terrorists.

India's Permanent Representative Syed Akbaruddin said Monday, "As a victim of terrorism for the past several decades we are cognizant of the nature of this menace and also the critical need for a collective international effort to counter terrorism."

Speaking at a meeting of the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) Advisory Board, he said strengthening the legal systems to counter terrorism is very important and the UNCCT working with other UN agencies can help member countries develop their capacity to effectively prosecute and punish acts of terrorism.

Referring to foreign terrorist fighters "from more than 100 countries" stalking the world, he said the UNCCT should expand its work to cover all the regions affected by it.

Akbaruddin said tht UNCCT's public information and outreach can help raise awareness about various gaps in the fight against terrorism and the possible remedies in meeting the challenge more effectively.

He also welcomed UNCCT's projects on youth skill development and employment facilitation in South Asia.
