Subrata Roy for beleaguered Modi

Hours before suspension of Lalit Modi, Sahara Pune Warriors team owner Subrata Roy says the cricket administrator has taken IPL to great heights and that none can deny his contribution to the game

Royal Challengers Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan are not the only team bosses who put their weight behind IPL commissioner Lalit Modi before he was suspended last night. Subrata Roy Sahara, chief of Sahara Group and owner of Sahara Pune Warriors, also showed he had a soft corner for Modi.

Though it was not clear whether he supported the continuation of Modi in the IPL, Roy did laud the contributions of the controversial IPL chief to cricket on the sidelines of a glittering ceremony to unveil the Pune IPL team name, Sahara Pune Warriors, and its logo.

Media circus
"There is no denying that Lalit Modi has taken the IPL to such a great height, and no one can deny his contribution. If there are some irregularities, then the law should take its own course. But today the reader is confused when he reads the newspaper. Nobody knows what exactly is happening," said Roy.

Earlier, Mallya had said Modi should be given some time to defend himself against the serious allegations of financial irregularities levelled against him. Even Shah Rukh Khan had tweeted his support for Modi.

But hours before Modi was suspended from his position of IPL chief by the BCCI, Roy refused to go into whether he was in favour of Modi remaining in command of the IPL.

"Like everybody else, I am at a loss to understand what exactly is happening. When a man who has made so many contributions to the IPL is being made the target, then I feel that things should come out clearly as to who is behind (it) and what exactly is happening," said Roy. "Unfortunately, things are not clear."
