Teachers of all central universities on a two-day strike, threaten to prolong stir

Here is your time to pack your bags for that long trek or a backpack holiday you have been planning for long.

The college is not going to open for at least four days now, as teachers across the nation have decided to go on a two-day strike from today. That leaves only Saturday and Sunday for the week, when most of the colleges already remain closed.

FEDCUTA feels that the University Grants Commission's attitude towards teachers' demand for removal of the negative conditions proposed in the regulation on service conditions was unrelenting.

Aditya Narayan Mishra, FEDCUTA president said, "We had stressed the need for laying emphasis on quality teaching and evaluation of students by teachers as the real component for Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). After having agreed with this formulation presented by us, the UGC officials promised to suitably amend their proposed regulation on service conditions."

However the teachers feel that if adopted, CAS for teachers as proposed, it would force teachers to pay more attention to other activities rather than concentrate on quality in teaching.

"The promotion modalities have been so devised that it would deflect teachers' attention from their primary responsibility. Moreover, the UGC Committee has given weightage to the activities such as campus development, institutional governance, consultancy projects, etc., which are not under control of teachers and which solely depend upon administrators' discretion," Mishra said.

FEDCUTA is also protesting against exclusion of teaching experience in ad-hoc and leave vacancy. It demands that ad-hoc and temporary service must be counted as part of the service for CAS.

The teachers' group is agitated over the "mindset" of the UGC officials to deny career advancement to teachers by bringing in criteria such as honorary PhD., Padam Shree, Jnanpith Award, Bhatnagar Award, and such other decorations, which would force teachers to do all other activities at the cost of teaching.
In case the Ministry does not amend the proposed regulation in service condition of teachers as per the demand of FEDCUTA, it plans to launch a protracted agitation.
