If the sight of ghar ka khaana is enough to make you want to go on a hunger strike, dial the number for a takeaway in Worli that's inspired by the chef's mother's recipes, instead

Kaviraj Thadani, the 22-year-old chef of Kolonial who's been trained at the prestigious Les Roche in the Swiss Alps, continues to seek inspiration in his mother's recipes.

At least that's the story elder brother Tarun, who refers to himself as "the person in charge of marketing, etc" is sticking to.

"My mother Meenu makes magic in the kitchen. She was raised in Indonesia, where she learnt how to cook from a very young age.

We always hoped to one day open a restaurant of our own, so that we could make the delicious food we grew up on available to others," says Tarun. Incidentally, the property, on which the eatery stands, belongs to the boys' father.

While Kolonial will function primarily as a takeaway for the time being, Tarun reveals that they plan on expanding to a small restaurant, serving Italian and American cuisine, soon.

The dishes we ordered from the current menu were delivered to us in good time. The Chicken in White Garlic Sauce was tasty (Rs 180), even though the portion wasn't particularly generous.

We also enjoyed the slightly sweet Vegetarian Spring Rolls (Rs 90), though they were a tad oily.

The Steamed Rice with Chicken and Vegetables (Rs 180) was nice too, and its sizeable portion can easily feed three people. Priced at Rs 120, the Coconut Pudding was a lightly flavoured gelatinous mass unless you're really fond of coconut, give this one a miss.

Kolonial offers free delivery to Worli, Lower Parel, and Prabhadevi. Beyond these areas, there's a delivery charge that gets added on to the tab.

They also have a catering menu, but no fixed rate per head for parties. Tarun explains, "The price would depend on the dishes ordered. Lobster, for instance, would raise the price. We can also arrange a live Sushi counter for parties."

AT Kolonial, Thadani House, 329/A Worli Village, next to Indian Coast Guard, Worli.

Kolonial didn't know we were there. The GUIDE reviews anonymously and pays for its meals.
