The Bhosari police have arrested the husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law of a 21-year-old law student who was found hanging at her home on Sunday. The three were arrested on charges of abetment of suicide after the parents of the deceased alleged she was being harassed to bring Rs 50,00 from them for a laptop for her software engineer husband, who works with an MNC.
The FIR in the case was registered after Sunday midnight, after the post-mortem report stated Jaishree's death was a suicide. The police arrested her husband Sushant, sister-in-law Dipti Sachin Dharve and brother-in-law Sachin Dharve.
The police are yet to arrest Jaishree's mother-in-law Pushpa and sister-in-law Bharati Bamble in the case. Dr Madhuri Sonekar-Sahade, the sister of the deceased, lodged the complaint at the Bhosari police station.
"The arrested trio will be produced in the local court," said Police Inspector Sudhir Aspat of the Bhosari police station. Dr Sanjay Sonekar, Jayashree's brother-in-law told MiD DAY that the family thought it was murder and not suicide.
"The main reason behind the harassment was dowry. We still suspect it's a murder and not suicide. Her in-laws harassed her mentally and physically for money on several occasions. They used to beat her if she opposed their unjustified demands for money," said Sonekar.
"Jaishree's parents even gave Rs 50,000 on March 23 to buy a laptop for her techie husband. Both the families met on March 26 to resolve issues, but their family was in no mood to listen to her parents' grievances. When the discussions turned heated, Sushant's sister started thrashing Jaishree in front of her parents."He added that the Jaishree's husband had taken loans from two or three banks and was under pressure to repay these.
