Is jazz dead? We think not. With international bands and quartets touring Bangalore from far flung parts of the world every other week, the city seems to be abuzz with jazz action.
The Goethe Institute is bringing back the Wolfgang Haffner Trio that performed for the first time in Bangalore back in 2005 and left behind a legion of loyal fans. Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson and German pianist Hubert Nuss form the other two of this trio.
With over 400 recordings to his credit, Haffner has explored his musical diversity successfully by working alongside artists like Chaka Khan, Pat Metheny, Woody Shaw, Joe Pass, Cassandra Wilson and Hiram Bullock- just to name a few.
The well travelled German, who learnt to play the piano at the tender age of six, has been part of many a successful band including a band called Zapplebeud which ultimately split up causing Haffner to create his own trio.
Haffner's new ensemble achieved critical acclaim after the release of their album titled Shapes in 2005 that brought about a successive album comprising remixes.

Now on a South-Asian tour that includes pit stops in Pune, New Delhi, Chennai, Dhaka, and Colombo and not to mention Bangalore, the group will promote a newly released album.
We spoke to Haffner in a telephone interview as he was getting ready to perform in Pune on March 24. He said, "We will be performing music from my latest album Round Silence.
The music has been written by me and has Nu Jazz influences with an infusion of hypnotic club beats." Nu Jazz is a style that infuses various musical influences with jazz.
Haffner said that he is looking forward to performing in Bangalore once again.
"Bangalore was fun the last time, I was here with American jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano back then and the crowd was very enthusiastic," Haffner said.
He claims that his trio is Germany's most successful jazz group and has recently won an Echo Award, a German award equivalent of the Grammys.
