The boys had a unique strategy to steal the goods. They would instigate a fight between their pet dog and the one guarding the factory and injure the guard dog before breaking into the factory premises at night.
All of them are residents of Dattanagar area in Chinchwad. Owner of the factory, Anant Kulkarni, has registered a complaint at the Pimpri police station.
The police said the incident took place around 4 pm on November 6. They entered the company premises by jumping off the compound wall and then broke into the factory through the exit.
Kulkarni said: "The factory was closed for Diwali. Around 4 pm, I heard some noise and saw five minors removing rust prevention spray boxes. The moment they saw me they tried to flee."
The boys recced the MIDC area with a black dog in the morning hours. They would then instigate a fight between their dog and the guard dogs at the factory. They would also pelt stones to injure the guard dogs, so that the next time they visited the factory, the dogs would be injured and limping and not in a state to give them a chase, an eyewitness said.
Another factory owner in the area said: "Majority of these theft cases happen on Wednesday night as there is an industry holiday on Thursday. So, the theft cases are recovered only on Friday, when the units reopen."
A businessman on the condition of anonymity said: "The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has constructed a nullah.
Two-wheelers can pass through this nullah easily which gives easy access to the culprits to conduct the theft smoothly."u00a0
Police official H M Pathan said: "These incidents are not uncommon. After the five minors were detained, many factory owners in the area have come forward and narrated similar instances, but none have lodged a complaint apart from Kulkarni."
