Gang of cheats led by central Delhi shopkeeper busted

Shopping with a credit card can be fun, especially if it belongs to someone else. A 36-year-old shopkeeper from central Delhi has been arrested for allegedly leading a gang of thieves who used to steal credit cards for him that he swiped at his shop and generated fake bills to the owners. The accused, identified as Rajesh Maini, was arrested from his shop by a Delhi police team.



Acting on a complaint regarding a lost bag containing a credit card, police found that the card was swiped to withdraw a total amount of Rs 1,82,000 within minutes of its theft.

"The information of the theft of the credit card was reported from Safdarjang Enclave (south Delhi) at 8.28 pm whereas this credit card was swiped at 8.46 pm at a shop located at C-11 Shardhanand Market in central Delhi," a police official said.

"It was revealed that the entire limited value of the credit card which is to the tune of Rs 1,82,000 was swiped by making four attempts within seven minutes only. The owner of the shop, Rajesh Maini Nath was arrested," the official said.


Wild card

Earlier this month three people, including an employee of an electrical appliances store, were arrested for cloning a credit card and purchasing electrical goods worth lakhs of rupees from the store in south Delhi.
Neeraj Mangla, 26, Chander Mohan Rawat, 29, both residents of Faridabad, Haryana and Amit Sharma, 30, a resident of Delhi, bought goods worth Rs 3.50 lakh from a shopping mall in Saket.
"The accused had cloned an Amex credit card belonging to a prominent south Delhi jeweller and had committed the crime December 24, 2010," a police officer said.
