Students at Lady Hardinge Medical College forced to wake up at 4am to keep vigil

Budding doctors at Lady Hardinge Medical College in the Capital are having sleepless nights. And it's not a complex medical problem but a law and order challenge that's the reason for this insomnia.

Several students have lost their laptops, mobiles, cash and other valuables. But many say, the situation is far more serious.

"Last week, someone entered our room and stabbed my room partner with a knife", said Rashmi Ahuja, a second year student.

As the authorities seem to be ignoring the issue, students themselves are becoming safety-conscious. As per sources, the thieves usually strike between 4am and 6am.

"Nowadays we get up before 4 am, just to keep vigil. Earlier, the security was tight, so we never locked our doors, but now we don't take any chances", said a third year student who did not wish to be named.

"We have been complaining about the issue to the director and other higher officials, but we haven't received any response yet," said a first year student.

When MiD DAY approached the director of the college, at first he denied having any knowledge of such cases. But when we persisted, he lost his cool.

"There are hardly any cases of theft in our college", said Dr GK Sharma, director, Lady Hardinge Medical College. "Why are you asking me this? If the students are complaining, then they will be the right persons to go to," Sharma added.

PROBLEMS GALORE

More than 40 doctors at the Hospital were recently diagnosed with dengue. Sources say that the number includes many MBBS students and resident doctors.

Apparently, Shivaji Stadium which is situated opposite the College was getting renovated for the Commonwealth Games. But, the stadium has now been excluded from the list of venues for the Games. The digging work has lead to waterlogging and mosquito breeding. Also after facing problems of water supply for months, hundreds of doctors at LHMC have started sending "Paani Do" (Give us water) SMSes every morning to the junior engineer (water) of the area. The water supply had been very erratic for the last six months. As repeated complaints to the authority concerned fell on deaf ears, the doctors have now taken refuge in 'Gandhigiri'.
