Tipplers cheer, schools jeer

Govt has lifted the shut-down order for pubs this weekend, but education institutes are unhappy as they have to postpone exams to next week

Schools in the city were in the middle of an examination cycle that was interrupted by the government's indecisiveness.

Princess Franklyn, the Principal of St John's High School in Frazer Town, said, "We were scheduled to have exams tomorrow but we're not certain how many students are going to show up so we're going to postpone it for a few hours and then see how it goes."

The pubs that had cancelled their gigs recently are putting everything back together.

BS Jayashree, Principal, Air Force School in Jalahalli, said, "Informing parents is going to be a very difficult task and we have exams going on now as well.

So depending on the strength of each class tomorrow we'll decide if we can have the exams." She added, "Organising this is going to be difficult for the staff."

Colleges also had their say in the matter and were equally perturbed.

Professor MN Sreehari, RV College of Engineering, said, "The government should not have done this at the last minute.

This latest announcement is a major inconvenience for parents, teachers and also the students." He added, "Everyone had hoped to go out during these holidays but now even that won't happen."

Commissioner of Education, Seshadhar, said, "All holidays have been cancelled. Schools and colleges will have a working day tomorrow as usual."

He added, "The government will have to decide if the September 28 will also be declared a holiday. We can't be sure until they make a formal announcement."

Pub owners relieved

Bangaloreans and pub owners can now breathe a sigh of relief. The state government's decision to revoke the previously announced dry day caused cheer in the city.

Mohan Kumar, deputy excise commissioner (EAST), said, "We had to revise our orders, which were ready to be sent out, at the last minute. But now, there won't be a dry day as planned." He added, "We're not sure if a dry day will be declared next week until the government tells us otherwise."

Carlton Briganza, executive director, Opus, said, "We'll go on as planned as well." He added, "I think in a country like India when things like this happen all the time, you just have to learn how to make it work."

Prasheel Cheruvari, operations manager, Kyra, said, "It has been a major inconvenience for us now that we
have to put everything back together."

He added, "We had to explain everything to a foreign band that we had booked. It's going to be a couple of sleepless nights for us."

Aarti Rao, owner, BFlat, said, "Everything will now go on as scheduled. We had cancelled a lot of gigs before but now we've put everything back together."
