The incident occurred around 10.45 pm when a musical function was underway at a ground in the area on the occasion of Annamma Devi festival. Over a thousand people were at the ground at that time, said a police officer. "Lokesh tried to somehow stop the vehicle, but it was too late," he added.
The injured have been admitted to Mallaya and Victoria Hospitals. Others, however, managed to escape with minor injuries, said the officer.
According to PSI K Suresha, the truck had come from Hoskote and had made a stop at Pallavi after it developed a problem in the air cylinder. After having his dinner, Lokesh, the driver, requested bystanders to help start the vehicle. While it was being pushed, the vehicle started to move towards the crowd.
The driver only realised that he had a break failure after the vehicle had moved 50 feet. But before he could do anything to stop it, it was too late. Then police have sent the driver to custody, and after a check it was established that he wasn't drunk.
