The deceased have been identified as Nimba Patil (60), the driver of the tanker and Shivaji Raman Bondare (40). The others injured were passengers, and were shifted to a nearby hospital.
“The driver took passengers from Alephata towards Vasai and the incident took place at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday on Malshej Ghat, some 32 kilometres from Tokawade police station. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which fell 100 metres inside the deep valley,” informed a police officer from Tokawade police station, who also confirmed that two people died on the spot. He added that eight of the injured were shifted to a private hospital at Alephata while two who suffered grievous injuries were shifted to KEM hospital in Mumbai.
The Tokawade police reached the accident spot at around 2 pm. “The villagers from Savarne and Timba village aided in the rescue operations and shifted the deceased and injured to the hospital. The milk tanker drivers normally take passengers from Alephata to earn extra money and drive the vehicle in full load, even after the tanker is full with milk. We have booked the driver for negligence and are further investigating the matter,” said a police officer from Tokawade police station.
A case has been registered at Tokawade police station under section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), 337(Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
